How I got started in design…

Hi, my name is Charlie Tran and I’m a Product Designer based in the San Francisco Bay Area with with over 10 years experience in delivering impactful, data-driven design solutions. My journey began at San Jose State, where I studied Advertising and Marketing.

Everything changed when I met Sean Zimmerman in our communication class. Sean, a graphic design student, would explain his design decision to me every time he completed a new project. His insights sparked my interest in design, leading me to discover my true passion for combining technology with design.

Adaptable. Collaborator. Obsessed with simplifying complexity.

In my twelve years at Ancestry, I have supported various work streams, including Growth Revenue, Freemium, Onboarding, Search, and 0-to-1 Innovation. I led the end-to-end design of projects such as ‘New Person Hints’ and ‘Free vs Paid,’ enhancing user onboarding and boosting engagement. These initiatives resulted in a 20% increase in free trials and a 29% rise in family tree creations.

I pride myself on effective collaboration with cross-functional teams across Product, Marketing, and Engineering, turning innovative ideas into reality and driving significant growth. With my extensive experience, I offer valuable insights, mentor fellow designers, and enhance the overall design quality of the teams I work with.

Beyond the pixels…

Outside of design, I enjoy trying new foods and traveling, especially to Vietnam. I love exploring my roots, meeting diverse people, and immersing myself in the art and history of different places. In my free time, you might find me sketching new design concepts, hitting the gym, or enjoying a good playlist. I believe in the importance of honesty, empathy, and connection in both my personal and professional life.
